The technique of reading the pulse is known as nadi vigyan. Nadi corresponds to pulse and vigyan means understanding, comprehension or specialized knowledge. The three fingers (i.e. index finger, middle finger and ring finger) symbolizing Vata, Pitta & Kapha can be thought of as the receptors and screening tools that diagnose and scan all the internal conditions of the body. The observations made are more graphical, reasonable and scientific rather than being symbolic to the movements of frog, swan, crow etc that used to be in the old times. In Ayurveda the information carried by the blood that travels through the nadi is made of the 5 elements:
